Mid Century Table- Before & After

A few years ago, my wonderful mom scooped up on a mid century table, which we coined the ‘boomerang’ table. It traveled with me through a few college apartments and houses, and eventually ended up in my attic. I took it down a few months ago, so Dax would have a table to make messes on in the studio. I got tired of looking at the thing, and I finally decided to paint it. I was hoping that once it was painted, it would look great in my living room between my two sofas. We had been using a somewhat extremely drab coffee table that was another hand me down from good ole’ mom, with a matching sofa table and end table. I’ll eventually get around to painting those too =)

So I started by sanding it and giving it two coats of Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer. I gave it one coat one night, and one coat the next night. I had to use my time wisely when Dax slept. It dries in one hour, so if you don’t have a toddler blazing through the terrible twos- you could do this in one day easy peasy.  This is the first time I’ve used it, and I love it. In the past I used Gripper, but after reading and doing some research- I thought I’d give this a whirl. After the second coat, the black was pretty much completely covered and I was ready to paint.

For the paint color I used Benjamin Moore’s Satin Impervo in White Diamond, which is a low lustre enamel. What does that mean? Well it means that when it dries it kind of dries with a hard layer of paint that won’t chip off easily. I’ll be putting this to the test fully, since I plan to keep it in my living room for a while. This is where Dax plays with most of his toys and likes to bang them on the table. I’m already cringing at the thought of seeing my pretty little table all beat up again, but we’ll see how it goes.

So here it is, in it’s new spot:

It really brightens up the space compared to the drab table I was telling you about. I also had an earthy colored rug there, but right now I’m enjoying it against the bare wood floors. Here’s a close up:

I love it! I also have another fun project to reveal tomorrow, so stick around!

Oh, and one more thing. This was my first thing to cross off of my 30 before 30 list. YAY FOR ME!
